Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo is a reconstructed medieval fortress complex that served as the political and military heart of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th to 14th centuries AD. Originally constructed on the ruins of a Byzantine fort, Tsarevets underwent its transformative development in the 12th century following the Vlach-Bulgarian rebellion, becoming an architectural and strategic marvel compared in grandeur to Rome and Constantinople. The extensive archaeological site contains the remains of over 400 houses, 18 churches, the royal palace, an execution rock, and numerous other structures spanning medieval Bulgarian civilization before Turkish forces destroyed it in 1393. Today functioning as a museum reserve, the fortress attracts visitors with its robust stone walls, historical Orthodox temples, residential remains, and a spectacular night-time Sound and Light Show that brings its illustrious past vividly to life.
