CASTLES SMOLYAN

Koshnitsa Kaleto Fortress stands on a dramatic conical limestone peak in the southern Rhodope Mountains near Smolyan, Bulgaria. Dating from the Chalcolithic era (5th-4th millennium BC), the fortress saw active use during the Late Antiquity and Byzantine periods, and again during the Second Bulgarian Empire (11th-13th centuries). Archaeological excavations have revealed a Thracian rock sanctuary from the 5th century BC within the site. The fortress features distinctive double-sided masonry walls constructed with crushed limestone and white mortar, offering visitors a tangible connection to millennia of occupation and defense in this mountainous region.

Turlata Fortress crowns Turlata Peak at 1,825 meters in the Smolyan region near the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria. Built at the beginning of the tenth century, the fortress formed part of a strategic defensive network protecting important trade routes through the Rhodopes connecting the Danube plains to Thrace and the Aegean. Visible remains of the fortress still stand atop this elevated stronghold, which was reinforced during the First Bulgarian Empire (681–1018 AD) to guard key mountain passes against Byzantine incursions. Its commanding position over the landscape reflects the medieval region's critical role in protecting commerce and military interests.

Gradishte Fortress is a significant Thracian archaeological site located in the Gela region of Smolyan, Bulgaria, situated about 3.5 kilometers southwest of the present village. The fortress exhibits two major construction periods, with the earliest dating to the Dark Ages in Southeast Europe (12th–9th century BC). Excavations conducted by the Regional Historical Museum reveal evidence of settlement and defensive structures spanning multiple historical periods. The site is situated on a prominent hill in the Middle Rhodopes, commanding views of the surrounding valleys and providing insight into ancient Thracian settlement patterns and military strategy.
