Shumen Fortress is a historic archaeological preserve overlooking the city of Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria. Built 3,200 years ago, the fortress represents layers of civilizations—originally fortified by Thracians, later developed by Romans, Byzantines, and medieval Bulgarians. During the Ottoman era, the fortress was destroyed in 1444 following the Battle of Varna. The remains sit 3 kilometers from the city center and have undergone restoration since 2012 as part of the Bulgaria Begins Here project, preserving this important monument to the region's complex history.
