Kaliakra Fortress crowns a dramatic 2-kilometer-long headland towering 70 meters above the Black Sea, located 12 kilometers east of Kavarna on Bulgaria's northern coast. Continuously inhabited since the 4th century BC by the Ancient Thracian Tirizi tribe, the name Kaliakra derives from Byzantine Greek meaning "beautiful headland." The Romans expanded and reinforced the fortress into an important defensive and commercial hub, while Hellenistic rulers added second walls. Today designated as a cultural monument within the Kaliakra Archaeological Preserve and nature reserve, visitors encounter rare plant species, dolphins offshore, and legendary tales including the poignant story of forty Bulgarian maidens who tied their hair together and leapt into the sea to escape Ottoman capture.
