Lutitsa Fortress, also known as the Marble City and Kaloyan's Citadel, is one of Bulgaria's best-preserved medieval fortresses located 5 kilometres southwest of Ivaylovgrad in the Eastern Rhodopes region. Originally constructed in the 4th to 6th centuries, the fortress gained prominence during the reign of Tsar Kaloyan (1197–1207) and served as a bishopric and later archbishopric centre for over 900 years. The impressive defensive structure features walls approximately 600 metres long and up to 10 metres high, with 8 of its original 12 towers still standing, including octagonal, round, and square variants. Archaeological excavations have recovered the citadel, donjon, two churches dating from the 10th and 15th–16th centuries, a necropolis with 15 graves, and remnants of ancient sewerage systems, providing invaluable insights into medieval Bulgarian life before the fortress declined and was abandoned in the late 18th century.

Mezek Fortress, also known by its Byzantine name Neoutzikon, is a well-preserved medieval stronghold near the village of Mezek in Svilengrad Municipality in southern Bulgaria. Built at the end of the 11th century or beginning of the 12th century, likely under Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus, the fortress functioned as a border guard installation after Byzantium conquered the First Bulgarian Empire. Strategically positioned to guard territories between the Arda and Maritsa rivers, the fortress occupies 6.5 decares (approximately 1.6 acres) and ranks among Bulgaria's best-preserved medieval fortifications. Though the battlements remained largely intact until 1900 when Ottoman forces demolished portions to reuse the stones for barracks construction in Svilengrad, substantial ruins remain visible today. The area also features two ancient Thracian beehive tombs—the Mezek and Sheynovets tombs—adding to the region's archaeological significance.

Bukelon Fortress, also known as Matochina Fortress, sits on a high plateau near the village of Matochina in southeastern Bulgaria, close to the Turkish border. Built during the late antique period, the fortress features a cross-shaped citadel with impressive defensive structures reaching 18 meters in height. The site witnessed pivotal historical events, including a major Roman defeat by Gothic forces in 378 AD and a crushing victory of Bulgarian Tsar Kaloyan over Latin Crusaders in 1205. Archaeological excavations reveal multiple layers of occupation spanning from the Early Iron Age through the Ottoman period, with stunning views across Bulgaria and Turkey.

Toplitsa Fortress rises on Sveti Duh hill overlooking Mineralni Bani, a national spa resort in Haskovo Province, occupying the site of the former Roman town of Toplicos. Originally built by Romans in the 2nd century, the fortress developed through four distinct construction periods spanning Roman, late Roman, early Byzantine, and medieval eras, extending its occupation to the 14th century. Archaeological excavations revealed abundant pottery including large granaries, ornate vessels, and copper, silver, and gold coins reflecting economic activity across centuries. Built from large stone blocks in an irregular polygon with two main and two smaller doors, the recently renovated fortress now features benches and gazebos, and hosts Saturday multimedia light shows projecting its layered history onto the eastern wall.

Belgrad Castle, also known as Byalgrad meaning "white fortress," stands eight kilometers from the village Gugutka in Haskovo Province, southeastern Bulgaria, representing a significant example of medieval fortification. Built in the 12th century, the fortress retains its best-preserved keep with walls reaching 8 meters high and 2 meters thick, constructed from the bright limestone that inspired its name. Reconstructed during Ottoman rule, Byalgrad survived centuries of regional conflict and cultural change, standing today as an important historical monument that embodies Bulgaria's medieval heritage and architectural legacy in the broader Balkan region.

Castris Rubris, whose name means "red fortress" in Latin, is a Roman military fort in Harmanli that once served as a critical strategic outpost along the Via Diagonalis, the 2nd-century road connecting the Western Roman Empire with Constantinople. Situated at a crucial junction guarding the vital routes of the Maritsa River valley in southern Bulgaria, the fortress functioned both as a military stronghold and as a substantial village complex serving travelers and merchants. Archaeological excavations revealed that the fort extended far beyond a simple military installation, encompassing residential areas and commercial infrastructure. The fortress site near the village of Izvorovo retains well-preserved walls offering insights into Roman provincial military architecture and the strategic importance of controlling trade routes through the Balkans during the imperial period.
