CASTLES SARAJEVO

White Fortress, also known as Bijela Tabija, is an ancient stone fortress perched on the southeastern slopes of Sarajevo at 667 meters elevation. Built around 1550 and rebuilt between 1727-1739, this national monument once guarded the entrance to the Miljacka valley and served as a critical defensive position for the city. The ruins today offer stunning panoramic views of Sarajevo and the surrounding landscape. Constructed of stone, the fortress originally housed a gun-crew and ammunition storage, reflecting its strategic military role. The site remains one of Sarajevo's most significant historical landmarks, accessible by a 20-minute uphill walk from the Old Town.

Bistrik Tower is an Austro-Hungarian fortress perched on a mountaintop overlooking Sarajevo, offering panoramic views of the city, the Miljacka River, and surrounding mountains. Originally built as a military observation post before World War I, it was transformed in 1967 into an astronomical observatory managed by the University Astronomical Society. The tower stands as a historical landmark bearing witness to centuries of change, from Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods through modern times.
