Elewijt Castle, also known as the Castle of Rubens, dates to 1304 and was purchased by painter Peter Paul Rubens in 1635 as a country estate for 93,000 guilders, where he lived with his young wife Helena Fourment until his death in 1640. The castle appears in some of Rubens' paintings and features a complex of buildings with a drawbridge, moat, and attractive grounds encompassing farmyards, gardens, meadows, and ponds. Purchased by Visit Flanders in 2019, the castle is being transformed into an interactive experience centre showcasing the master painter's life and work, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
