Fort 2 in Wommelgem is one of eight Brialmont forts constructed between 1860 and 1864 to defend Antwerp as part of Belgium's strategic 'Big Rampart' plan. This fortress underwent reinforcement with concrete between 1909 and 1911, with two gun turrets added to enhance its defensive capabilities. In 1977, the municipality of Wommelgem purchased the fort and transformed it into a cultural institution housing seven museums, including the Brialmont Museum, Provincial Police Museum, Musical Instrument Museum, and World War I & II Museum. Set within a 33-hectare green domain, the fort offers visitors both historical exploration of its military past and recreational opportunities including walking trails, cycling paths, football fields, athletics tracks, and pétanque courts.
