CASTLES WILLEBROEK

Kasteel Bel-Air is an 18th-century castle in Willebroek, Belgium, built around 1810 in late classicist style and distinguished by a portico with Doric columns. The municipality purchased the estate in 1974, and the castle opened as a cultural center in 1975, hosting meetings, lectures, educational activities, exhibitions, and small concerts. The surrounding green park was renovated and reopened in 2018, providing a scenic setting for this elegant historic residence.

Kasteel de Bocht stands in Willebroek near Antwerp, a neoclassical castle built in the early 19th century after the original medieval structure was demolished in 1812. Its distinctive architecture features a neo-gothic tower added around 1855, constructed using materials salvaged from a demolished church. Set on four hectares of grounds within the municipality of Heindonk, the estate reflects centuries of aristocratic heritage, having served as a country residence and hunting pavilion. Though largely abandoned and used for sand extraction in the 1970s, the castle domain eventually came under the stewardship of the Ministry of Public Works, preserving this important piece of Belgian architectural history in the Antwerp region.

Fort Breendonk is a reinforced concrete military fortress built between 1906 and 1913 near Willebroek as part of the defensive ring protecting Antwerp and its port. Designed to withstand mid-19th century artillery, the fort became a Nazi transit camp from September 1940 during German occupation, holding resistance fighters, political prisoners, and Jews under Flemish and German SS command. Approximately 303 people perished at the fort including executions, with another 1,741 estimated deaths in other camps following transfers. Today it stands as one of Europe's best-preserved World War II camps, functioning as a memorial and museum offering insight into wartime conditions.
