CASTLES WESTERLO

Merode Castle in Westerlo, Antwerp, is a remarkable late medieval hill castle with roots possibly traced to a Roman watchtower or Frankish villa. The castle's central keep likely dates to the late 14th century when the lords of Wesemael occupied the site. Since 1484, the noble House of Merode has continuously resided at the castle, gradually transforming it from a defensive fortress to a luxurious noble residence from the 16th century onward. The castle is set within a 12-hectare English landscape park featuring ponds connected to the original moat.

Kasteel Jeanne de Merode is a striking neo-Gothic castle built between 1909 and 1911 in Westerlo that evokes the aesthetic of Downton Abbey. Originally home to Countess Jeanne de Merode and staff, it was later used as a retirement home by Augustinian sisters before the municipality acquired it in 1972 and converted it into the town hall. The surrounding park retains its original design with a pond, fountain, and artwork, while visitors can explore the castle during municipal office hours or participate in organized group tours. Elementary schoolchildren enjoy a special experiential program combining dress-up costumes and interactive building exploration.
