Château de Sombreffe is a medieval fortress dating to the early 13th century, originally built as a simple keep by the Lords of Orbais as a border fortress of the duchy of Brabant. In the 13th century, a circular curtain wall with several towers, a gate, and secondary keep surrounded the original structure. The castle passed through various noble families including the Vernembourg, Culembourg, and Lannoy families across centuries. The upper keep was destroyed by fire at the end of the 16th century and rebuilt in brick in the early 17th century; an additional lord's residence was constructed beside the primary keep in the 18th century. Today, the castle is notable for its variously shaped towers and operates as a private event space and popular wedding destination.
