CASTLES NIJLEN

Fort van Kessel is a concrete fortress constructed between 1909 and 1912 in Nijlen as part of Antwerp's strategic defensive ring. When German forces invaded Belgium on August 4, 1914, the fort became an active participant in defending against the German advance and endured an intense bombardment on October 4, 1914, when over 123 massive projectiles from German and Austrian artillery struck the installation. Today, the protected monument is nestled within green countryside and serves as an important natural habitat for various bat species and unique flora and fauna. While the fort itself is not freely accessible, visitors can walk around the surrounding moat, arrange guided tours, and enjoy fishing opportunities in its waters, with the site granted protected monument status in 2018.

Kasteel de Bist is a neoclassical castle built in 1743 in Kessel, Nijlen, Antwerp province, Belgium, surrounded by a moated and wooded park. The oldest historical references to the 'Hof De Bist' date to the late 17th century. In 1739, the estate came under ownership of the Mechelen Verhocht family, who commissioned the main building's construction. The rectangular stone structure combines French château and Dutch kasteel architectural elements, showcasing the evolution from defensive fortifications to residential estates. Rebuilt in 1948 after World War II damage, the castle features neoclassical design with a neo-traditional wing to the east. It currently functions as a nursing home for the Lierse nursing sisters and is located on the border with Lier. Guided tours are available through the local tourism office, and the castle and park open to visitors during special heritage events.
