CASTLES HERVE

Fort of Battice stands as one of Belgium's most significant World War II defensive positions, located near the town of Battice in Herve. Built between 1934 and 1940, the fort represents the final generation of Belgian fortifications and was engineered with 15 combat buildings connected by three kilometers of underground galleries. During the 1940 German invasion, Fort Battice withstood an intense 12-day siege featuring heavy artillery bombardment and Stuka dive-bomb attacks before its surrender on May 22nd. Today, the preserved fort remains open for public visits by appointment, featuring guided tours of approximately 2.5 hours and an exceptional collection of period artillery equipment, making it an essential destination on Belgium's remembrance tourism route.

Bolland Castle in Herve embodies medieval and Renaissance architectural layers spanning five centuries. The square-shaped keep, likely constructed in the 13th or 14th century, represents the castle's earliest fortified element, while significant architectural campaigns in the 16th and 17th centuries added substantial structures and refined the defensive design. Medieval lords d'Houffalize and Brandenberg were followed by the d'Eynatten, Berlo, and Groesbeek families in the 16th–17th centuries, each leaving architectural traces. The de Lannoys retained ownership for two centuries until the de Berlaymonts acquired it in the 19th century. Baron Adhemar de Royer de Dour de Fraula purchased the castle in 1920; his descendants continue residence there, maintaining the property as a living historical monument. A historic moat once surrounded the structure, and nearby stood a 17th-century convent of Recollects founded by Jean de Berlo, reflecting the estate's spiritual and temporal significance to the Hainaut region.
