CASTLES EVERGEM

Kasteel ten Bos, also known as Kasteel van Wippelgem, is located in Wippelgem, a locality of Evergem in East Flanders. The domain's documented history stretches back to 1375 as "Goed ten Hulle," owned by Ghent patrician Sander Cante. Following its acquisition around 1400 by Gelnoot III Damman, a prominent Ghent landowner, the property remained in aristocratic hands. After a devastating fire, the castle was completely rebuilt in 1892, featuring a distinctive U-shaped layout with forward-extending side wings that enclose a three-sided entrance court. Originally operated as a restaurant and event venue from 1992, the castle was purchased by the municipality of Evergem in 2008 and partially renovated. Since 2010, it has served as a venue for anniversaries and wedding ceremonies.

Mottekasteel Hoge Wal is one of Flanders' best-preserved medieval mottes, located in Ertvelde, Evergem, Belgium. Built in 1190 by Zeger II, this motte-and-bailey castle features an upper courtyard serving as watchtower and refuge, a lower courtyard with outbuildings, and protective moat—all still clearly visible today. Destroyed in 1385 during the Revolt of Ghent, archaeological excavations have recovered artifacts from the 13th and 14th centuries. Now a protected monument, the site offers guided walks and educational programs exploring medieval Flemish architecture and settlement patterns.
