Château-fort de Solre-sur-Sambre is one of Hainaut's oldest fortified castles, built between the late 13th and 15th centuries in limestone. The fortress features a vast keep with multiple stories flanked by towers crowned with machicolations, displaying remarkable medieval fortress architecture. A stone bridge with two arches now replaces the original drawbridge. Originally belonging to the Barbençon seigneury, it later passed through the families of Carondelet, Mérode, and Wignacourt. Today, visitors can explore the exterior architecture and surrounding moats while walking paths that circle the estate, enjoying views of the fortress's distinctive medieval features and the pleasant village setting.
