Kasteel van Berlare represents an 18th-century Flemish estate rebuilt around 1722 under the direction of Aloysius vanden Meersche, lord of Berlare. Parallel rococo-style outbuildings grace the front courtyard, likely originating in the late 1700s, while the castle's architectural character reflects classical Flemish design principles. The domain passed through notable ownership transitions, remaining with the Vanden Meersche family until 1791, subsequently entering the De Lichtervelde family through marriage. The municipality acquired the castle in 2008, transforming it into a public heritage asset. Today, the expansive surrounding landscape garden—featuring tree-lined paths, forest areas, and ponds—is accessible to walkers and cyclists since 2012, though the castle and outbuildings themselves remain closed to visitors, preserving the historic structure for posterity.
