Weitra Castle stands as an architectural landmark in the upper northwestern Waldviertel near the Bohemian border. Originally built in the 13th century as a medieval fortress, the castle was severely damaged by sieges and underwent comprehensive renovation between 1590 and 1606, when imperial architect Pietro Ferrabosco transformed it into a magnificent Renaissance structure. The imposing rectangular complex features four Baroque gables and a distinctive tower with three-story arcades surrounding a large courtyard with a Renaissance fountain. Extensively restored in 1994, the castle now houses five museums including a Beer Museum in its historic cellars, celebrating Weitra's centuries-old brewing tradition, while serving as a versatile venue for cultural events.
