CASTLES TULLN

Burg Greifenstein is a hilltop castle overlooking the Danube in Lower Austria, likely erected in the 11th century by the Diocese of Passau and first documented in 1135. Perched on a rocky outcropping of the Wienerwald, it commands a scenic position across from Kreuzenstein Castle. Following romantic reconstruction in 1818 and development as a tourist destination in the 1960s, the castle sustained fire damage in 2006 and has been listed for sale since 2010. Despite its uncertain present status, Greifenstein remains architecturally and historically significant to the Danube region.

Neuaigen Castle, a late Renaissance palace in Tulln an der Donau, exemplifies 16th-century aristocratic architecture with its two-story main building and graceful arcaded courtyards enclosed by four symmetrical wings. Built on the site of a fortified structure commissioned by King Maximilian I in 1494, the castle stands as a testament to Northern European Renaissance design principles. Its protected heritage status reflects the castle's historical significance and architectural integrity. The well-proportioned square gate tower and refined decorative elements showcase the refined tastes of its historic owners, positioning this castle as an important cultural landmark in Lower Austria's Danube region.

Burgruine Ried is a castle ruin located at Riederberg in the Wienerwald near Tulln in Lower Austria, with origins dating to approximately 1200. First documented in 1125 under feudal lord Hadmar v. Kuenring, the castle changed hands multiple times during the medieval period, eventually becoming property of the influential Habsburg sphere. The fortress fell into disrepair during the 15th century. Today, sparse remains include a Romanesque round tower, curtain wall, and outer fortress structures. The round tower underwent professional restoration in 2010 in collaboration with federal monument authorities, and the site remains actively researched by a dedicated preservation association that conducts archaeological excavations and hosts public engagement events.
