CASTLES STEYR

Vogelsang Castle in Steyr is a striking Neo-Gothic mansion constructed between 1877 and 1883 by Josef Werndl, founder of an Austrian weapons factory, who commissioned architect Anton Plochberger to create a villa inspired by Scottish castle design. The castle features a distinctive triangular gable with rosette crowning the central axis, corner towers, and fortress-like battlements. It served as a student residence for a Franciscan order from 1928 to 1996 and is now known as the Vogelsang Palace Residence, showcasing the architectural ambitions of late 19th-century Austrian industrial magnates.

Rosenegg Castle in Steyr dates to the Middle Ages, with its first documented mention in 1383, and originally functioned as a farmstead before becoming a formal residence. This two-story castle features distinctive round towers on its rear side, strategically positioned to minimize risk from valley landslides, and is surrounded by a wildly romantic garden. Privately owned by the von Ronay family, passionate patrons of the arts, the castle hosts cultural events and candlelit piano evenings, attracting young artists and musicians seeking an intimate venue with historical character and refined ambience.
