CASTLES SANKT GEORGEN AM LÄNGSEE

Burg Taggenbrunn, a revitalized castle in Sankt Georgen am Längsee, Carinthia, rises on a hilltop where Celtic-Roman settlements once flourished in the 6th century BC. First documented in writing in 1142, this castle was built in the 12th century under the Archbishopric of Salzburg and witnessed the medieval passage through destruction and rebuilding before becoming a ruin in 1796. Modern transformation began in 2011 when entrepreneur Alfred Riedl purchased Taggenbrunn and converted it into Carinthia's largest winery alongside a hotel, restaurant, and art exhibition space. The castle now hosts the renowned Taggenbrunner Festivals and offers wine tastings amid the Alpe-Adria landscape, seamlessly bridging nearly 900 years of history from medieval fortress to contemporary cultural and gastronomic venue.

Originally constructed in the first third of the 12th century by Tagenus of Pongau on commission of the Archbishop of Salzburg, the castle was built atop the remains of a Celtic-Roman ringwall settlement dating to the 6th century BC. After centuries of historical significance, the castle underwent extensive restoration and now serves as a vibrant cultural venue. The restored castle hall hosts the Taggenbrunner Festspiele, an annual festival established in 2019 that emphasises classical music, jazz, and opera productions of high calibre. Beyond performances, the site accommodates a restaurant and hosts art exhibitions, making it a multifaceted cultural destination that honours its medieval heritage while serving contemporary artistic audiences.
