Renaissanceschloss Greillenstein in Röhrenbach showcases exquisite Renaissance architecture and craftsmanship. First mentioned as a fortified stronghold in 1313, the castle was acquired in 1534 by Baron Johann Lorenz von Kuefstein, whose son commissioned Italian architects to demolish the medieval structure and build the current masterpiece between 1570 and 1590, completed in 1604. The square castle surrounds an arcaded courtyard featuring Renaissance precision and refined Baroque additions including elegant balustrades. Within its 60 rooms, visitors discover original Renaissance and Baroque furnishings, elaborate coffered wooden ceilings, magnificent stucco work, ornate tiled stoves, and a remarkable Renaissance bathing complex—one of Austria's only surviving examples with separate hot and cold water chambers. The Kuefstein family still owns and manage the castle as a museum since its opening in the 1960s.
