Burg Wartenstein is a well-preserved castle in Raach am Hochgebirge, prominently positioned above the Schwarzatal valley at 765 meters between Grasberg and Raachberg. Originally constructed in the 12th century to protect the historic wine road running from Austria to Carinthia, the fortress features an elongated courtyard with a distinctive round gate tower, eastern wing towers (one serving as a watchtower), and a rectangular Romanesque keep. The castle preserves a Gothic chapel and fortification systems under monument protection. Local legend speaks of an underground passage connecting the castle to the former Benedictine monastery Gloggnitz, possibly serving as an escape route.
