Burg Vichtenstein is a castle in Upper Austria's Schärding district, positioned at 531 metres above sea level on a dramatic rock cone overlooking the Danube valley. Though lacking documentary evidence of its founding, the castle is believed to have been constructed around 1100. Serving as an administrative centre for the Bishopric of Passau in medieval times, it was later mortgaged to and eventually acquired by the counts of Schauberg. The castle sits high in the Sow Forest, surrounded by pristine woodland, offering commanding views of the surrounding Danube landscape and the Bavarian countryside beyond.
