Maissau Castle is a magnificent medieval fortress in the Hollabrunn district of Lower Austria, with documented origins tracing to 1122 when Rudolf and Rozinus von Maissau are first mentioned in historical records. This 13th-century stronghold originally served defensive purposes and evolved into an emblem of architectural grandeur. The powerful ministerial Lords of Maissau dominated the region until 1440, after which the Counts of Abensperg and Traun maintained continuous ownership since 1526. While privately owned and not open to public interior visits, the castle's impressive masonry can be admired from scenic vantage points throughout its surrounding woodlands, and the estate has recently begun wine production.
