Güssing Castle, established around 1180 by King Béla III of Hungary, is Burgenland's oldest castle. Built dramatically atop a steep porphyry volcanic cone at 293 metres elevation, the fortress features a remarkable exhibition titled "400 Years of Art" and a Gothic chapel with ornate altars. The Batthyány family acquired the castle in 1524 and maintains ownership through a historical foundation. Today it houses a comprehensive museum with over 5,000 historical objects, extensive art collections, and period furnishings, while its restaurant offers visitors panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
