Schattenburg in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg, stands as one of Austria's best-preserved and most significant castle complexes, dominating the town from an elevation of 480 meters. Founded around 1200 by Count Hugo, the castle served as the ancestral residence of the Counts of Montfort until 1390 and subsequently came under Habsburg administration before being purchased by the town of Feldkirch in 1825. Since 1917, Schattenburg has housed the museum complex, featuring 18 exhibition rooms showcasing period furnishings, Gothic and traditional costume displays, a historic chapel, and a renowned collection of timepieces including the Appenzeller and Toggenburger Spindle Clocks. The Palas (great hall) and Bergfried (keep tower) remain prominent architectural features, with the tower offering panoramic views of the town. The castle also houses a restaurant providing dining with views of Feldkirch's historic center, while its current 2026 exhibition explores the theme of freedom in Austrian history.
