CASTLES TIRANA

The Fortress of Bashtovë is a medieval quadrangular fortress built over a 6th-century Byzantine structure, now standing as a well-preserved 15th-century Venetian stronghold near the Shkumbin River in central Albania. With walls reaching 9 meters high and original dimensions of approximately 60 by 90 meters, this strategically positioned fortress once defended the important Adriatic corridor along the Via Egnatia route. Though it fell to Ottoman forces in 1417, the castle remains in excellent condition, declared a National Cultural Monument in 1948 and submitted to UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list in 2017.

Petrela Castle rises 329 meters above sea level on a hilltop just 12 kilometers from Tirana, offering spectacular views of the Erzen valley, olive groves, and surrounding mountains. Originally constructed in the 6th century but rebuilt in the 15th century, the castle gained historical prominence when Skanderbeg's sister, Mamica Kastrioti, commanded it during the resistance against Ottoman expansion. Today, visitors can reach the fortress via an easy looping pathway and enjoy dining at the on-site restaurant while taking in vistas of central Albania's diverse landscape.

Preza Castle is a captivating medieval fortress perched on a ridge northwest of Preza town, commanding breathtaking views over the Tirana plain extending toward the Adriatic coast. Constructed during the 14th and 15th centuries by the Topias feudal family, this strategic stronghold once exchanged visual signals with neighboring fortresses at Kruja, Petrela, and Durrës, forming a communication network across central Albania. Today, visitors can explore the castle's four remaining towers, including an impressive clock tower, enjoy traditional Albanian cuisine at the on-site restaurant, and relax in the spacious green courtyard ideal for picnics and recreation.
