CASTLES LORI REGION

Kayan Fortress, also known as Aknaberd or Kayanberd, perches dramatically on a sheer cliff between the villages of Akner and Haghpat, towering above the Debed River canyon in Armenia. Built in the 13th century to defend the nearby monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin from invaders, the fortress stretches approximately 120 meters along the canyon ridge, accessible only from its southern end. The fortification features approximately 15 towers and mighty defensive walls reinforced by natural gorges on three sides, with ruins of buildings, ancient water systems, and the St. Astvatsatsin church visible on the site. A 1.5-kilometer hiking trail provides access to the fortress, rewarding visitors with panoramic views over the distinctive Debed canyon landscape and remnants of its medieval ecclesiastical protection mission.

Lori Castle, also known as Lori Berd, is an 11th-century medieval fortress founded by David Anhoghin, positioned between the Dzoraget and Miskhana rivers near Stepanavan in Armenia's Lori Province. Rising nearly 1,500 meters above sea level on a rocky plateau, the fortress once served as the capital of the Kyurikyan Kingdom and housed approximately 10,000 residents during its 11th to 13th-century peak, functioning as a vital trade hub connecting Ani, Dvin, and Tbilisi. The 214-meter-long defensive wall encircles remains of a palace, bathhouses, chapels, and private apartments, providing archaeological evidence of its importance as both a military and administrative center. Though damaged by Mongol forces in 1236, the fortress was rebuilt and continued to play a significant role under Georgian, Turkish, and Persian rule.
