Black Fortress, known locally as Sev Berd, is a striking 19th-century circular fortification in Gyumri, Armenia, constructed between 1830 and 1834 from black tuff stone—the source of its distinctive name. Built under Russian oversight following the end of the Russo-Persian War, the fortress was designed to accommodate up to 15,000 soldiers with sophisticated military infrastructure including three-story hospitals, ammunition warehouses, and food storage facilities. The fortress complex demonstrates remarkable engineering for its era and has been recognized as a national cultural heritage monument. Following extensive restoration efforts, it has been transformed into a contemporary cultural venue and concert hall, blending its historical significance with modern functions for the benefit of Gyumri's tourism and cultural identity.
