Bjni Fortress is a medieval Armenian stronghold built in the 9th to 10th century by the royal Pahlavuni family of the Bagratid dynasty, perched at 1,540 meters on a promontory overlooking the Hrazdan River in Kotayk Province. Strategically positioned to protect the Armenian capital of Ani from northern invasions, the fortress was expanded and fortified by Prince Vasak Holum Pahlavuni and endured numerous sieges by Turkish and Mongol forces throughout the medieval period. The fortress complex encompasses residences, a 10th-century Church of St. Gregory featuring traditional Armenian ecclesiastical single-nave design, reservoirs, and defensive walls that command views of the surrounding Hrazdan River valley. This well-preserved medieval site reflects the architectural and military engineering achievements of medieval Armenia.
