Qale'H-Ye-Balahissar, meaning 'High Fort' in Persian, is an ancient fortress in Kabul dating from around the 5th century AD. Positioned south of the modern city center at the foot of Kuh-e-Sherdarwaza Mountain, this historic stronghold served as a royal residence and military stronghold through multiple empires, including the Mughals who besieged it in 1504. The fortress features massive walls—20 feet high and 12 feet thick—and was originally divided into lower and upper sections housing palaces, stables, barracks, armory, and the city's dungeon. Bala Hissar stands as a significant landmark in Afghan history, witnessing centuries of imperial rise and fall.
