Weitenegg Castle

Weitenegg Castle ruins command a dramatic position overlooking the Danube River and represent one of the most important medieval fortifications along the river valley. First mentioned in a document in 1108, the castle complex originally consisted of an elongated multi-storey structure with a palace, two keeps, four courtyards, and two kitchens, complemented by high chimneys and curtain walls. In 1870, large portions were demolished to salvage materials for the ultramarine factory at the base of the castle rock. Today, the picturesque ruins remain a significant historical landmark in Leiben, with the adjacent Weitenegg leisure center featuring a child-friendly bathing beach and abundant hiking trails that draw visitors exploring the Danube region's rich cultural heritage.
