Waroux Castle

Waroux Castle represents a rare example of circular castle architecture in Belgium, preserving its original keep within the Hesbaye region near Ans despite centuries of transformation. The medieval fortress served as the ancestral seat of the distinguished de Waroux family for centuries until 1525, when succession passed through marriage into new hands; the family gained renown as key participants in the devastating Awans-Waroux feud (1298-1335) that ravaged the region. The Waroux Peace treaty signed at the castle culminated this conflict, making it a site of historical significance in regional medieval politics. Acquired by the commune of Ans in 2005 following centuries under the De Clerkx de Waroux family (1696-1925), it now hosts major exhibitions, conferences, and concerts, transforming its fortress heritage into a vibrant contemporary cultural venue.
