Waldenstein Castle

Schloss Waldenstein is a historic fortress situated in northeastern Carinthia between Bad St. Leonhard and Wolfsberg at approximately 760 meters elevation in a side valley of the Lavanttal. Built around 1150 by order of the Diocese of Bamberg, the castle features a Romanesque square tower from the 13th century with attached Gothic residential buildings added between the 14th and 16th centuries. The layout centers on a nearly square courtyard with a fountain, reflecting its medieval military origins. Though not open for interior tours, Waldenstein Castle remains visitable from the exterior, offering visitors insight into centuries of regional history and architectural evolution under the ownership of the Ungnad von Sonnegg family.
