Vikingsholm

Vikingsholm is a distinctive 38-room castle mansion located on the shore of Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe in Tahoma, California, representing one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in North America. Built in 1929 for wealthy Chicago widow Lora J. Knight, the castle was designed by architect Lennart Palme after Knight and her nephew traveled through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland studying medieval fortresses and stave churches. The exterior features granite boulders embedded in mortar characteristic of 11th-century Swedish stone churches, combined with massive hand-hewn timbers typical of early Norse construction. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the castle offers guided tours from Memorial Day weekend through late September, allowing visitors to experience its remarkable architectural heritage and stunning lakeside setting.
