Trim Castle

Trim Castle represents the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland, constructed over 30 years by Hugh de Lacy and his successors, and stands as the ultimate symbol of Norman glory in the heritage town of Trim. The castle's monumental centerpiece is a three-storey, 20-sided keep featuring a cruciform shape, surrounded by multiple defensive layers including a ditch, curtain wall, and water-filled moat. Its remarkably thick walls are nearly impregnable for their era. King John notably chose to stay in a tent across the river rather than occupy the castle during his visit. Visitors can explore the grounds freely or join guided keep tours costing €3–€5. Modern walkways allow viewing into the keep's interior, though steep and narrow stairs limit accessibility for those with disabilities.
