Trasmoz Castle

Castillo de Trasmoz is a medieval fortress in Aragon's Macayo Mountains, inhabited since at least the 12th century despite a devastating fire in 1520 that left it in ruins for centuries. The castle features characteristic medieval Spanish architecture with thick stone walls, a central keep, and concentric defensive structures surrounding an inner courtyard. Located in the village of Trasmoz—famously excommunicated by the Catholic Church and inhabited today by only 30-60 residents—the castle occupies a unique place in Spanish folklore, linked to local legends of witchcraft and the mysterious builder Mutamín. Hundreds of tourists annually visit the restored fortification, a central attraction of the village's dedicated witchcraft museum and annual cultural festival.
