Traismauer Castle stands on Roman foundations, occupying the site of the ancient Augustianis Cavalry Fort along the Danube. First documented in 860 and owned by the Salzburg Bishopric for 1,000 years, the castle gained literary fame through The Lay of the Nibelung, which describes Kriemhild's stay there before meeting Attila the Hun. The castle now serves as a cultural and event venue, hosting exhibitions of Roman artifacts, the annual Kultursommer festival, and private celebrations. A UNESCO World Heritage Site designation recognizes the region's Roman legacy.
