Tower of Tribute

Tower of Tribute, known locally as Torre del Homenaje, crowns the medieval castle of Zahara de la Sierra overlooking the white-walled village cascading down its slope. Dating from the Nazari period with its current square tower built in the 1400s, this well-preserved fortress replaced an earlier Moorish tower and features a keep with rounded corners chamfered to resist impacts, highlighted by an alambor or sloping wall on its northwest face. Strategically positioned to maintain visual contact with other fortresses including Olvera, Cote, and Matrera castles, Zahara served as an important defensive enclave and border fortress protecting Ronda and Málaga against Christian invasions. From the tower's summit, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the village, reservoir, and surrounding countryside.
