Tower Dupre

Tower Dupre is a hexagonal Martello tower constructed between 1830 and 1848 to defend the approaches to New Orleans from Lake Borgne. Built at the entrance to Bayou Dupre in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, this Third System fortification represented military innovation during the era of coastal defense. During the Civil War, the tower served as a Confederate garrison until the fall of New Orleans in 1862, later abandoned in 1883. Though the structure suffered severe erosion from the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Tower Dupre remains a historically significant reminder of 19th-century American military fortifications and Louisiana's strategic importance.
