Torre del Fraile

Torre del Fraile in Frailes, Algeciras, stands as one of Spain's coastal sentinel towers constructed in the 16th century to protect against Barbary pirates and monitor maritime traffic. Designed in 1588 by Luis Bravo and Juan Pedro Laguna, this watchtower rises over six meters in diameter and was originally over thirteen meters high, positioned 240 meters inland from Cala Arenas beach. The tower's entrance situated five meters above ground led to interior floors with stairs ascending to a signaling platform where soldiers maintained firewood for communicating with Gibraltar. Connected by sight lines to other watchtowers along Spain's southern coast, it exemplifies the sophisticated defense networks that protected Mediterranean trade routes and coastal settlements.
