TORRE DEL CASTELLAR

Torre del Castellar in Tobarra is a Hispanic-Muslim military enclave constructed at 714 meters altitude in the 11th century, with decline beginning in the 13th century. This fortress-castle of tabiya (rammed earth) occupies a watchtower position and preserves cisterns for water storage alongside wall sections. Following its 1268 cession by Alfonso X the Wise to a Muslim nobleman for integration purposes, it was subsequently sold to the council of Alcaraz, reflecting the complex political transitions of medieval Iberia. The tower now appears on Hispania Nostra's List of Endangered Heritage due to structural concerns including alarming cracks caused by the 2023 Ossa de Montiel earthquake, making it one of the province of Albacete's most significant Islamic heritage remains.
