Tioram Castle

Tioram Castle, pronounced 'Cheerum,' sits on a rocky tidal island in Loch Moidart in the Western Highlands, accessible only at low tide across a sandy spit. Built in the mid-13th century and extended in the 14th century, it served as the seat of the medieval Lords of the Isles and ancestral home of the Macdonalds of Clanranald. Winston Churchill described it as one of the most beautiful places he knew; the castle features a massive curtain wall and 16th-century extensions, though interior access is restricted due to structural concerns and the atmospheric ruins remain hauntingly picturesque.
