Thurnham Castle

Thurnham Castle, located in Detling near Maidstone in Kent, occupies a site fortified since Roman times, beginning as a watchtower before Saxon development under the name Godard Castle. During the 12th century, the de Thurnham family, whose members notably crusaded with Richard the Lionheart and commanded English naval forces, controlled the fortress. Today the castle exists as atmospheric ruins within White Horse Wood Country Park, featuring low stone walls overgrown with vegetation that offer visitors a glimpse into medieval fortification history and accessible vantage points for those exploring the North Downs Way National Trail.
