Thracian Fortress

Thracian Fortress near Kardzhali refers to Perperikon, an ancient Thracian city and sacred site perched on a 470-meter rocky hill 15 kilometers northeast of Kardzhali in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. Founded around 5000 BCE during the Bronze Age, Perperikon served as a royal residence and spiritual center for Thracian kings and remained in use until the 14th century. The complex encompasses a palace-temple, fortified fortress, settlement, and circular temple, representing over 4,000 years of occupation by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, and Bulgarians. The site, still undergoing active archaeological research, stands as Bulgaria's best-preserved ancient Thracian town and provides unparalleled insight into pre-Classical Balkan civilization.
