Thomaston Castle

Thomaston Castle stands as a remarkably intact shell west of Maybole in South Ayrshire, a medieval stronghold originally constructed in the 13th century for a nephew of Robert the Bruce. Initially owned by Alan McIlvaine, whose family supplied wine to the nearby Earls Kennedy of Culzean Castle, the castle later passed by marriage to the MacIlvaines of Grimmet who held it for a century. Abandoned around 1800, the castle demonstrates the resilience of medieval Scottish architecture with its remains relatively preserved except for some upper features, showing little change from its historical appearance. Protected as a Scheduled Monument in recognition of its medieval significance, Thomaston Castle remains an important landmark in the Scottish historical landscape.
