Tantallon Castle

Tantallon Castle is a striking 14th-century fortress perched on dramatic cliffs near North Berwick in East Lothian, Scotland, featuring a magnificent 50-foot-high red sandstone curtain wall considered one of Scotland's finest examples of medieval castle architecture. Built as the stronghold of the powerful Red Douglas dynasty, the castle withstood multiple royal sieges before falling to Oliver Cromwell's forces in 1651, leaving the formidable curtain wall largely intact. The site offers breathtaking views over the North Sea toward Bass Rock and its seabird colonies, and visitors can ascend to the battlements to appreciate the castle's impressive scale and strategic location.
