Subida Castillo de Galeras

Subida Castillo de Galeras refers to the accessway climbing to the Castle of Galeras (also called Fuerte de Galeras), an 18th-century fortress built atop a prominent hill in Cartagena's San Antonio Abad district in Murcia. The castle derives its name 'Galeras' from the types of ships that historically sought refuge at its base, reflecting its importance to maritime defense. Designated as a Cultural Interest site in 1997, the castle commands strategic views overlooking both city and harbor landscapes. The ascent to the fortress, rising 130 metres over 2.8 kilometres, can be accessed from the Puerta Navantia near the historic Navantia shipyard, approximately 2 kilometres from the port. The trail doubles as a vehicle road suitable for pedestrians, rewarding climbers with magnificent panoramic views that underscored the fortress's value as a sentinel guarding Cartagena's maritime approaches and interior territories.
