Stubenberg Castle

Stubenberg in Styria hosts several notable medieval castles. Neuhaus Castle (Burg Neuhaus) is a castle ruin perched on a rocky ridge above the Feistritz River gorge, founded in the mid-14th century by the Stubenberg family as a seat of power. Originally featuring thick stone walls and a fortified tower, the castle has been adapted to provide residential apartments for visitors. Herberstein Castle, the "Garden Castle of Herberstein," stands on an east-west-facing rock near a wildlife park, with origins dating to the 13th century and Renaissance expansions in the 16th century. The region's castles reflect the heritage of the Stubenberg family, a prominent Austrian noble house documented since around 1160.
