Strome Castle

Strome Castle is a dramatic ruined fortress perched on a tall promontory overlooking Loch Carron on Scotland's west coast, 3.5 miles southwest of Lochcarron. Originally built in the 15th century by Alexander MacDonald, Lord of the Isles and Earl of Ross, the castle was besieged and subsequently demolished in 1602 after being captured by Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Lord Mackenzie of Kintail. Presented to the National Trust for Scotland in 1939, the site remains freely accessible and offers stunning panoramic views across Loch Carron toward the Isle of Skye. The windswept ruins, accessible at any reasonable time, embody the turbulent history of the Scottish Highlands and provide a contemplative setting for exploring medieval Highland life and clan heritage.
